Our cause
The forest is the orangutan's only home - protecting it is the whole point of the journey.
Tanjung Puting National Park protects one of Borneo's last strongholds of wild orangutans. In partnership with FNPF at the Jerumbun Reforestation Sanctuary, every guided journey supports rainforest protection, native tree planting, orangutan conservation, and the local communities working to keep this forest wild. Traveling upriver by kelotok is only the beginning — the encounters themselves unfold quietly at the forest's feeding camps and planting sites, where wild orangutans still roam free.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
The dry season, roughly April to October, makes the Sekonyer easiest to navigate and the days easiest to plan around, but the wild orangutans visit the feeding camps year-round, so there's really no wrong time to come.
Fly into Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun, usually via Jakarta, Semarang, or Surabaya. From there we arrange your transfer to Kumai harbour, where your kelotok is waiting.
Your kelotok for the whole trip, a licensed and knowledgeable, local guide, captain and crew, all meals, water, coffee and tea, and transfers to and from Kumai — everything you need once you land in Pangkalan Bun.
Keep a respectful distance from the orangutans, and never feed or touch them - they're wild animals, not performers. Part of every trip you take with us goes back into conservation and the local community that protects this forest.
Simple and functional - your kelotok has a basic onboard bathroom, so you're covered even out on the river.
Yes. Every trip is led by an experienced, licensed guide with a captain and crew who know the Sekonyer well, life jackets are provided, and the river itself is calm and easy travelling. In case anything happens, we've got you covered with complimentary micro insurance to get you out of the jungle safely.
They support the park's orangutan rehabilitation work. The orangutans that visit are wild or semi-wild and completely free to come and go - the feeding simply supplements what the forest provides while populations recover.
On the open deck of the kelotok, under mosquito nets and the stars — it's one of the best parts of the trip. Mattresses and bedding are provided.
Only limited, and that's part of the point. Consider it a proper escape, and bring a power bank for your phone or camera.

WHO WE ARE
The Real Borneo is a boutique eco-tourism agency dedicated to authentic wildlife conservation. In exclusive partnership with FNPF (Friends of Nature, People and Forest), we are one of the very few tour operators who visit Jerumbun — a vital habitat corridor and reforestation sanctuary at the edge of Tanjung Puting. Here, FNPF leads critical forest restoration by planting native tree species to reconnect fragmented jungle habitats for wild orangutans and endemic wildlife. Guided by licensed local experts and a crew born to these rivers, every expedition directly supports rainforest protection, habitat restoration, and local community livelihoods.
